Supporting Our Associates as New Counsellors at Vancouver Therapy Collective

Starting out as a counsellor can be rewarding but also difficult. Most graduate programs prepare therapists to work with clients, but very few cover the practical side of running a private practice. Many new counsellors leave school with strong clinical skills but little support for building a career.

With new associates, we try to bridge that gap. Our associate program is set up to give new professionals a place where they can continue developing their skills as counsellors, gain experience with clients, and learn how to manage the realities of practice in a supportive environment.

Who Our Associates Are

Associates usually come to us in two ways. Some are former practicum students who trained with us and showed themselves to be highly motivated and capable. Others are early-career counsellors who are beginning independent practice and want structure and mentorship as they build their work.

In both cases, we look for counsellors who are passionate about the field, open to growth, and ready to take on the challenges of building a career.

Building Independence While Part of a Team

One of the ways we differ from many other practices is how we set up our associates. Instead of presenting them only as counsellors within the Vancouver Therapy Collective, we support them in creating their own professional identities.

We help associates clarify their approach, define their brand, and present their expertise in ways that are easy for potential clients to understand. This can include developing messaging, designing a logo, choosing brand colours, and outlining their story as a professional. We also provide guidance in setting up marketing channels, such as websites or Instagram, and creating clear paths for clients to connect with them.

The goal is that when associates leave us, they already have the tools to carry their practice forward on their own.

Training, Supervision, and Daily Involvement

All associates receive close clinical supervision and mentorship. They also have access to additional training and activities that help them develop as well-rounded professionals.

Alongside their client work, associates support the Vancouver Therapy Collective in practical ways. They may take intake calls, assist with daily operations, or contribute ideas as the practice grows. They also see a small number of sliding-scale clients, which supports our commitment to affordable therapy in Vancouver and across BC.

Flexibility in How Careers Grow

We do not use non-compete clauses. Associates are free to take clients with them when they leave us. They may also choose to renegotiate their relationship with us if they want to continue accessing resources or remain connected to the collective. This approach gives new professionals flexibility while still providing stability and support during their early years of practice.

Why This Approach Matters

By offering this structure, associates can focus on becoming effective therapists without needing to immediately manage all the pressures of running a business. They gain real experience, clear feedback, and the chance to build a professional identity.

At the same time, clients benefit from motivated counsellors who are well-supported and part of a learning-oriented environment. This makes more affordable therapy available in the community while also helping young professionals establish sustainable careers.

Our Commitment

Vancouver Therapy Collective is committed to supporting both clients and counsellors. For new counsellors, that means providing the guidance, resources, and freedom to grow into confident, independent professionals. For clients, it means access to therapy that is affordable, competent, and delivered by counsellors who are supported every step of the way.
